DANVILLE, Ky. – Danville has been named one of the top places in the U.S. to retire.
On Tuesday, CNN/Money released a list of the “25 Best Places to Retire” and Danville was among the cities named in the article. CNN compiled a list of cities and towns in America with reasonably priced homes, low crime and tax rates, and quality health care. Danville was listed first among the small towns recommended as retirement destinations. The rankings this year were broken down into big city, college town, resort area and small towns.
According to the CNN/Money article, Danville’s biggest draws are “lots of culture and an equestrian scene.”
“There are plenty of microbreweries, restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques, not to mention the area’s regional medical center right in town,” the article states.
Jennifer Kirchner, executive director of the Danville/Boyle County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the visitor’s center, located in Grayson’s Tavern on Constitution Square State Historic Site, is most frequented by couples looking to retire to Danville.
“Life in Danville offers a peaceful pace that is focused on family and heritage. The cost of living is reasonable, the pace is pleasant, and beauty is unending,” Kirchner said.
Other towns listed in the CNN/Money article include: Louisville, Ky.; Sevierville, Tenn.; Portland, Ore.; Tucson, Ariz.; Austin, Texas; and St. Augustine, Fla.
“It is certainly exciting to have made this list,” Kirchner said. “We are in very good company. In my opinion, this designation – as we have seen with many others we have received – means prosperity and vitality for our local economy, and a deepening sense of pride and ownership of our community.”
This is the second time CNN/Money has selected Danville as one of its 25 Best Places to Retire; and last year, “Where to Retire” magazine profiled the city in its November-December issue. In October 2010, Bankrate, Inc., named Danville one of “10 Great Places to Retire in the U.S.” based upon median home prices for communities named in Elizabeth Armstrong’s book “America’s 100 Best Places to Retire.”
Best Boomer Towns continues to rank Danville among the “Best 21 U.S. Places for Retirement” for Baby Boomers to thrive.
“Attracting retirees, their investment, and their civic capacity is just one of our diverse economic development strategies,” said Jody Lassiter, president and CEO of the Danville/Boyle County Economic Development Partnership. “Retirees have a significant economic impact, but I am even more impressed by the wisdom and talents that recent retirees have already given to our community through their volunteer service.”
