Back for a 23rd year, the Great American Brass Band Festival will honor one of its finest planners and performers. The festival, set for June 7-10, will celebrate and salute one of America’s most renowned performers, Vincent DiMartino, co-founder of the GABBF, on the occasion of his retirement at Centre College. Subtitled TRUMPETISSIMO in honor of this virtuoso on the cornet and trumpet, the GABBF will draw some of the world’s finest trumpeters, including Doc Severinsen, Allen Vizzutti, Jens Lindemann, and an amazing array of other outstanding soloists. The famed Herald Trumpets of the U.S. Army Band from Washington, DC, return to add their pomp and pageantry, and they will be joined by specially-formed trumpet and cornet choirs featuring top professional players and former students of DiMartino. The GABBF always offers an eclectic blend of brass styles and performing combinations, and this year will be no exception. Among the notable combinations will be several outstanding New Orleans’ style jazz brass bands, the all-female brass quintet Stiletto, Federal Brass (brass quintet and percussion) from the U.S. Army Field Band, the Kentucky Baroque Trumpets, and two outstanding British-style brass bands: Atlantic Brass Band, champions of North America, and the excellent North York [...]

After two wildly successful years, the Danville Lawn Chair Film Festival is back for a huge third round in 2012, elevating the festival to blockbuster status. Set for 9 p.m. on May 18 in the heart of downtown Danville at Constitution Square, the festival offers filmmakers the chance to see their movies shown on a huge outdoor movie screen in front of a packed audience. Last year, more than 350 attendees brought their lawn chairs and packed Constitution Square to view the screened entries. Festival organizers are introducing a dining and red carpet element, so we expect an even larger audience this year. Films of all genres are welcome. We encourage entries from across the world. In our first year, one of the festival winners came from Germany! In addition to the open call for all films, the festival announces two special categories: The Lawn Chair Challenge and 30-Second Spot. The Lawn Chair Challenge asks filmmakers to incorporate a series of elements into a film. This division had two popular entries in 2011, and the festival hopes additional filmmakers will take the challenge in 2012. Entries in the 2012 Lawn Chair Challenge Division must include: Product Placement: Intentional placement of [...]

Danville, KY — Preservation Kentucky will host the second annual Preservation Pedal: A Bike Tour of Historic Boyle County on Saturday, July 7, 2012. There will be several touring options available, including a slow downtown tour of Danville and Perryville, as well as more traditional 10, 30, and 50 mile routes. All tours will start in downtown Danville or Perryville with several routes traversing the historic Boyle County countryside. The Preservation Pedal is held yearly in a different Kentucky community to highlight historic downtowns and rural buildings. Last year’s tour was held in Springfield and Washington County on July 2, 2011. Through sponsoring the Pedal in different communities, Preservation Kentucky hopes to support local businesses and raise awareness of our organization, bike touring, and bike friendly amenities in small town Kentucky. All proceeds will go to assist Preservation Kentucky in furthering our mission of historic preservation education and advocacy. “This is our second year hosting the Preservation Pedal,” said Rachel Kennedy, Executive Director of Preservation Kentucky. “It is such an exciting event that successfully gets our mission to folks who may never have heard of us. And most importantly, it gets people out in the beautiful Kentucky countryside looking at [...]
